  • Leafcutter John moves from Planet Mu to the avant-garde German label Staubgold with THE FOREST AND THE SEA, shifting to a folksier mode in the process. The simple ache of and guitar of "Let It Begin" gives way to a thicker, more reverberant electronic atmosphere, while "Maria In The Forest" starts out with a perambulating field recording before easing into in and out of ambience. The first two movements of the "Dream" sequence appear, float and disappear, before coming to fruition in the strummed "Dream III." "In The Morning," by contrast, as a low, chanting throb, which slowly grows as it electrifies into a sonic wall. "Seba" strips things back down, while "Now" blends the seashore with processed strings before the song finally opens into its gentle way. An intriguing album, if a bit too understated.
